    Valentin Lambert

A swaddle can help some newborns sleep more soundly by limiting awakenings related to the Moro reflex. When used correctly, it provides a sense of security, facilitates falling asleep, and can improve sleep for the whole family. But you still need to choose an appropriate model and follow safety recommendations.

The first night I used a swaddle with my baby, it worked immediately. Two short awakenings, quick to fall back asleep. Nothing like the 6 or 7 awakenings per night we had before. The next morning, I had that almost forgotten feeling of having satisfied my need for sleep, instead of starting the day tired, or even annoyed.

It's not just a matter of comfort. When your own needs are met, you are much more available to meet your baby's needs. And that changes an entire family.

Here's what I've learned from my parenting experience and discussions with many families.

    Why use a baby swaddle?

Is a swaddle more practical than a classic blanket?

Before discovering the fabric swaddle, I used a classic swaddling blanket. The problem is that it would come undone during the night.

And changing a diaper with a swaddling blanket that comes undone, in the middle of the night, takes a lot of time — easily enough to wake the baby from their sleep.

Once their arms are free, the baby wakes up on their own. They lose that contained feeling that allowed them to connect their sleep cycles.

The result: you have to rock them longer to get them back to sleep. And the cycle starts again, night after night.

Why design makes all the difference?

Not all swaddles are created equal. Many are either too restrictive, too unsafe — or simply not designed for breastfeeding.

Discover our miniLambert baby swaddle, designed around these essential criteria to support baby's first nights.

What really makes a difference, in my opinion:

Hands in a raised position for better comfort

Hands in a raised position, not along the body.

This prevents startle awakenings related to the Moro reflex, while allowing the baby the freedom to bring their hands to their mouth to self-soothe — which also contributes to their cognitive development.

Legs free to respect baby's natural mobility

Legs free. Unlike a classic swaddle that is too tight, which can pose a hip risk, a well-designed swaddle allows the legs to move freely.

A fitted cut that recreates a reassuring sensation

A fitted cut at the torso, which recreates a sensation similar to the mother's womb.

It's this reassuring containment that helps baby connect their sleep cycles instead of waking up between each one.

Does a swaddle work from birth?

Can a swaddle be used from the baby's first days?

"But does it work from birth?"

That's the first question almost all mothers ask me. The answer is yes, from day one.

The second concern is the fear that the baby will not adapt to not being 100% free to move.

My answer is always the same: baby can move, they can bring their hands to their mouth.

And most importantly, they have just come out of a much more constrained environment than that — their mother's womb, where they had even less room to move.

The swaddle does not deprive the baby; it responds to a natural need for comfort and security.

    When to stop swaddling?

The right indicator is not just the baby's age.

I am often asked at what age to stop swaddling and switch to a sleep sack.

There is no fixed age — generally around 6 months, but it depends on each baby.

As baby grows and becomes more mobile, the sleep sack gradually becomes the appropriate alternative.

Baby's development is the main indicator.

The real indicator is when the baby is able to roll over on their own and get onto their stomach.

At that point, it is imperative to switch to a sleep sack, to avoid any risk of suffocation.

    This is non-negotiable.

    Parents' opinions on the swaddle

    Parents finally getting rest

"I finally got to sleep after 6 weeks postpartum!! This sack saved my life!!"

A solution appreciated even by skeptical parents

"I was skeptical, but my boy LOVES it! He loves being swaddled but also having his hands near his face. I will buy more without hesitation!"

The impact of the swaddle on the whole family

Better sleep for baby can also help parents.

Beyond baby's sleep, there is an effect on the entire family balance.

A baby who cries more puts enormous pressure on parents, who can find themselves disagreeing, even leading to parental burnout in the most difficult cases.

Lack of sleep is an exponentially vicious cycle. Without a solution, it is extremely punishing.

But this loop is easily broken — which is exactly what a good swaddle does.

For me, it's not just a piece of clothing or an accessory: it's a tool that can truly ease the first few weeks.

And it's the best baby gift you can give.

    My advice to future parents

Have several swaddles on hand to always be ready.

Babies spit up, diapers overflow, and if you only have one and find yourself without it, even for a single night, you will regret it.

Frequently Asked Questions about baby swaddles

My baby doesn't like being swaddled, what should I do?

Some babies need time to adapt when they first experience swaddling. It's possible to start gradually, especially during sleepy times when the baby shows signs of fatigue.

Each baby has their preferences: the goal is not to force, but to offer a reassuring environment adapted to their needs.

Is a swaddle suitable for a breastfed baby?

Yes, a well-designed swaddle can be compatible with breastfeeding.

A practical model should allow you to handle the baby easily during night feedings and diaper changes, without having to completely remove the swaddle.

What material should I choose for a baby swaddle?

The material is an important criterion because newborns have sensitive skin.

Soft, breathable materials suitable for temperature variations, such as cotton or certain natural fiber blends, are generally preferred.

What's the difference between a swaddle and a sleep sack?

A swaddle is mainly used during the first few months of life, when the baby seeks a contained sensation.

The sleep sack then takes over as the baby grows and becomes more mobile.

It allows for safe sleep and stays in place all night, unlike a blanket.
